Playing dress up is basically a right of passage. Most of us grew up wanting to be like our mothers or another woman we admired. We would dress up in their clothes, shoes and accessories and strut around the house pretending to be them. Princess Diary in Edae lets you relive that feeling, but with wedding gowns. If you are anything like me, you are a girl who has fantasized about her wedding most of her life and already has most of it planned out. It doesn't help that in America there are so many shows devoted to weddings. Princess Diary is a great place to go with your single friends who love weddings. They also have suits for men, so you can bring your boyfriend!

The Cafe

When you first walk into Princess Diary, you will be greeted with some menus and you can choose where you would like to sit. I'm guessing they do get a lot of foreigners, as they have English menus. The drinks are just the typical beverages like teas, coffee, smoothies, etc. The cafe has a really cute setup. There are about 3 sets of tables in the main area and then 3 little houses, shown above. The houses can seat about 4 people inside.

The Rules

The rule is you need to order ONE drink per person in order to try on dresses. The drinks range from about ₩4,500~6,500. You can either drink you beverage before you try on dresses or after, but you cannot drink while you have a dress on or use the bathroom. The rental fee for the dresses range from ₩10,000~40,000. They have both short dresses and long dresses depending on your preference. While you have your dress on you are welcome to use any of the accessories, like gloves, tiaras, brooches, flowers, for free. Also, your makeup needs to be done before you get into the dress for obvious reasons.

Picking a Dress

I already had an idea of what type of dress I was looking for, but the dresses here are very limited. All the dress have the princess theme, so they are all basically ball gowns, which I am not fond of. My ideal wedding dress is a fit and flare, so its very fitted but has flare at the bottom. I ended up just finding one that at least had a bodice I liked (the top) which is the sweetheart neckline (pictured below). Once you choose a dress you can't change your mind! Apparantly they have all sizes but remember they are Asian sizes, so they are smaller than the Western sizes. I found the dress I wore to be too tight! I was literally spilling everywhere!

Even though the styles are meager, here are some things to think about before choosing a dress:
  • What type of fabric do you like?
  • Do you want sleeves or no sleeves?
  • What kind of neckline do you want?
  • Do you want a long dress or short dress?
  • Do you want a white dress?
  • Do you want something simple or with bling?

Taking Photos

The cafe has selfie sticks that you can borrow but they are not very strong. My phone kept falling out of it. You can also take polaroid pictures but they cost ₩2,000 each photo. It's a great keepsake!. The staff are also available to take pictures for you if you are alone or with friends and want photos together. There is a time limit to wear the dress and take pictures-- which is 1 hour, if you go over then you will have to pay extra.

Princess Diary is a fun experience if you like weddings or if you are just looking for something unusual to do.
