Solo in Hongdae

30/12/2015

I haven't really been out and about exploring in awhile because the weather in so unpredictable. One week it's freezing the next it's mild. Today was one of those mild days so I decided to go to a few places that have been on my to do list. I tried to go to a cafe call "All that sweets" but it was closed. I saw it on instagram, they have Christmas trees and snowmen on lattes made from whipped cream and it looked really cool. Since that was closed I went to Mecentapolis near Hongdae.

It was not what I expected it to be. First, it's not really a mall. It's more like a bunch of stores clumped together outside but covered.

It's like a wind tunnel in there it was so cold. They do have some good stores, but I was interested in being inside......out of the cold. I only stayed about thirty minutes.

After walking around I headed to Hongdae to look for a place called "Air Cafe". It's a cafe with the theme of an airplane. I walked around for 30 mins trying to find it, which I couldn't. I saw a restaurant which a cheap menu so I just went in there. Once inside I searched the internet again for the air Cafe only to find out on their actually page, it was moved. Oh well. The restaurant I went to instead is called Urban Sheriff. The dishes range from 8000-19000. To start I ordered a honey beer. I've had grapefruit beer and other flavours but never honey. I found it to be good at the beginning but then got too sweet hear the middle.

I was so hungry, I hadn't eaten all day. So, I ordered calamari (12k) and then the chicken steak set (9k). The chicken steak set came with two chicken breasts, seaweed rice with and egg on top, veggies and a pineapple slice with a honey glaze on the side. Also the typical pickle and radish side dish. The food was pretty good and inexpensive.

After that I wanted to go do some Karaoke. I heard there was solo karaoke rooms in Hongdae and I found one called Su Noraebang on Lonely Planet. I got there after 6pm, I paid 11k for an hour and got a free drink cup. Drinks are unlimited! I had to wait 7 minutes for a room, it was pretty packed. Who knew solo karaoke would be so popular.

There are actually a whole bunch of Su Noraebang rooms in the area, but only this one has solo and duo rooms. Depending of the time you visit the prices vary, you can pay as little as 2k-14k. In the morning before noon is the cheapest, after 6pm it's the most expensive. They have multiple floors but I was on the ground floor.

Finally it was my turn, I was in room 11.

The room is pretty tiny. It's spacious for one and comfortable for two. On the wall it has a sign for unlimited drinks for 1,000 won, and uploading your song on fb for a free karaoke voucher. If I didn't sound like a banshee I would have done it ㅋㅋ. The remote control is in Korean so I had to just fiddle around with it to figure out the buttons. This is what happens when you are too lazy to learn Korean so you can't read anything! Also there is no song book so you have to type in whatever song you want or look through the popular list. It look me a good 25 minutes to get started and once I did I didn't want to stop.

Inside the room
I love noraebang, but when you go in a group it's hard to get enough time to sing all the songs you want to. Going solo ensures you sing whatever you want. * The rooms are not sound proof so people next door can hear you can you can hear them when you are in between songs. I sang maybe 25 songs. I ended up picking random songs because my mind went blank. Word of advice~ ^^have songs in mind so you can just plug them in and start right away. I ended up adding an extra hour because I was having so much fun. But next time I will just say 2 hours, the prices seem to change very fast! * Another word of advice, drink lots and lots of water. I was soooo perched in there, it gets really hot.

Getting to Su Noraebang: Take Line 2 (green line) to Hongik University. Take Exit 9 outside and go straight. At the first traffic light cross the street and turn left. Count three streets and make a right on the third street. Then you are going to walk straight until you get to the second large intersection then make a right. You with see a white building right beside a hookah bar which is Su Noraebang.
