So, I have a list of restaurants I want to try before I leave Korea. Braai Republic has been on the list since last summer but I never went. I finally had the opportunity to try it and was very pleased. First of all, Braai is the South African word for barbecued/grilled meat. Braai Republic is a South African restaurant in Itaewon. I've always wanted to visit South Africa so it's great that since I haven't yet I can at least try the food.
The restaurant is small and a bit cramped with seating and the decor was very interesting. There was zebra hide and I think the other was antelope hide on the walls (not sure if it was real or not). Also, there we lots of pictures on the walls. They even had animal heads mounted on the walls.
Everything on the menu looked amazing. They had barbecued sausage, lamb chops, shrimp, meat pies, etc. I wanted everything but my eyes are usually bigger than my stomach so I decided not to get a huge meal. I ordered #2, which is the lamb chops with sweet potato and spinach. I also got the house South African wine, which was a nice dry red wine that went perfectly with the meat. They have a great selection of South African wines, beers and spirits so make sure to try them with your meal.
The food came out really fast and was perfectly done. It was medium well, so it was pretty juicy inside. The sweet potato was really delicious and well as the spinach. The spinach has some sort of marinade that tasted like it was mixed with cheese, it was just really good and creamy.
Here's a close up. Ahhh it just looks so good, my mouth is watering looking at this picture. If you are in Seoul, please try this place, you will be satisfied. the best thing to do is to go with at least 3 people so you can order different dishes and try everything. I hear the meat pies are to die for ^^. The manager is really friendly, he goes around talking to the customers and asking if they enjoyed their meals, sometimes even having longer conversations. It's a very welcoming restaurant.
Here is the rest of the antelope?
Getting Here: It is fairly easy to get to from Itaewon subway station (Brown line 6) . First from the station take exit 4 and head street out of the subway. Keep going straight until you see the McDonald's sign, if you get to McDonald's you went too far. There is a side street just before the McDonald's where you need to turn left. Then you will get to a 4-way intersection. Continue straight and the restaurant is on your left side just past the intersection.
