You may notice that if you search Ubud Palace and Puri Saren Agung they look a like. Well that's because they are the same thing! I spent about 15 minutes wandering around trying to find Puri Saren Agung not knowing it was Ubud Palace thanks to google maps! Ubud Palace was a 10 minute walk from my hostel and was really easy to find. The best part about visiting here is that there is no fee to visit. This palace was the official residence of the royal family in Ubud.
This temple definitely felt royal. The temples here are very unique looking and have the most beautiful finishes and carvings. The carvings are very elaborately detailed. I finally decided to get more use out of my selfie stick!
Some of the carvings I found to be a bit strange. I'm obviously not cultured on the meanings behind these sculptures. However, I can appreciate the intricacy here.
Fun Fact: The Ubud Royal family still lives here despite the temple being open to the public.
You will notice a lot of Balinese temples have similarities in the way they are built. All Puras (Balinese Hindu Temples) have to built in a way that follows certain rules, style, guidance and rituals of Balinese architecture. I love that they are so different from temples in other cultures.
When I first arrived in Bali, I saw many statues wearing Sarongs and wondered what that was all about. The sarongs are usually patterned in black and white, this one is blue and white, but the white symbolizes good and the other colour, in this case blue symbolizes evil.
Another thing that you will notice in Bali are the doors. I took so many pictures walking around Ubud that were just of doors because they are so colourful and detailed. I think I explored around the temple for about 30 mins. This temple didn't need a lot of time because it wasn't very big.
After exploring the temple I wanted to find something to eat. I had researched earlier on places that were cheap but delicious. I had come across a place close to my hostel called Warung Sen San. The restaurant was small but cozy and had a variety of different foods. I ordered a chicken dish which was really good and filling. It cost me only about $3!
After eating I walked around for a little bit just to get a better sense of the area before I left for my appointment. Ubud is such a great place to explore and sight-see.
