Needing a body massage but find they are too expensive? Then visit one of Seoul's Healing Cafes. A Healing Cafe is a place that offers healing services like a full body massage, aromatic scents and a beverage at a cheap rate.
Mr. Healing is the first Healing Cafe I have ever visited. I wasn't really sure what to expect but it looked like it would be really relaxing. If you want to visit, it is best to book an appointment because it gets busy. If you don't know Korean then I would suggest going in early and booking an appointment or wait it out in the cafe. Mr. Healing is all throughout Korea, so click here to find a location closest to you.
When you first walk in the first thing you see is the cafe and the aroma of a medicinal humidifier. The prices for the cafe differ; for a 20 minute massage the cost is 4,000 won, 30 minutes is 7,900 won, 50 minutes is 9,900 won and these all come with a beverage at the end. When we got there we had to wai about 10 mins because there were people in front of us. They ask you what drink you want so that when you come out from the healing center your beverage is ready for you.
After waiting 10 minutes we were led to the healing center. The healing center is a quiet zone. Everyone is relaxing, some sleeping. The room is split up into cubicles with two massage chairs in each. There is a small table in between the chairs where you are supposed to put your shoes in. There is also a hanger on the wall for you to put your jacket. Afer you take off your shoes there are plastic feet covers you have to put on.
This is what the chairs look like. They are more like astronaut massage chairs.
After you are ready to start an empoyee will come in and explain the settings to you. Unfortunately, they are in Korean, so my friend had to translate. However, she basically said the first setting is preset to stretch mode. Stretch mode for 20 mins. After the 20 mins you get to decide what mode you want for the remaining 30 mins. There are 3 options ~ stretch, intense stretch or sleep mode. Before you start sanitizer is strayed on your hands because your hands will be in a sleeve. Then they place a blanket on your legs. If you want to change your mode there is a call button on the arm rest to get an employee to come over to change the mode for you.
Stretch mode is really good to start as it massages all your pressure points. I was wearing boots with heels which can be painful after tons of walking and the foot massage was amazing. The massage chair actually moves up and down as well and really stretches your legs. The back massage gets painful on the lower back after awhile but you leave feeling amazing.
After the stretch mode I opted for the sleep mode because I didn't think I could handle stretch mode again. Sleep mode is supposed to be relaxing, for the most part it was until I felt the massaging on my lower back. I got a nice butt massage and head massage, that was putting me to sleep.
The chairs are facing the wall which had a single art photo and a spray. I'm not sure what scent it was but it was very relaxing.
After 50 mins we were all done and had to wait for someone to get us out of the machine so we took some selfies. These ̶c̶h̶a̶i̶r̶s pods felt like a mix between a virtual reality ride and a sleeping pod.
After our massages we went back to the cafe, where our drinks we already waiting. I ordered the honey tea, which was literally just honey mixed with tea and was very sweet. We went to sit by the window and sipped our drinks in silence. We were both very relaxed and feeling a bit lathargic after our massages. Originally, I wanted to have a spa weekend but spas can get quite expensive in Seoul, Mr. Healing in a great option for people who want to get a massage at a fraction on the cost!
