After Longshan temple we decided to walk to Modern Toilet Restaurant to eat. I know it sounds weird, right? Everyone knows I love theme restaurants so I had to check it out. The walk was actually a lot longer than we expected but lots of great scenery. We passed lots of graffiti, interesting stores and foods.
The buildings are old looking but have a lot of character.... and colours!
Finally we came across Modern Toilet, it's obviously very conspicuous.
Modern Toilet is a famous restaurant in Teipei, for reasons you could probably figure out. This restaurant is a novelty. Poop is something that people usually will never have discussions about because it's one of those taboo topics you don't talk about...... unless you're me. This restaurant pokes fun at the topic of poop.
On the second and third floor is the dining area. The seats not on the wall are actually pretty toilet seats. There is literally poop everywhere; the tables, the menus, the walls.
There is free wifi available and is on each table so you can Snapchat your experience. I was pretty hungry so I decided to order a meal whilst Oullie just got dessert. I got bacon spaghetti with cream sauce. It cost 230 TWD ($9) and came with a beverage, soup, an entree and dessert. I got tea because it was cold and rainy outside and it came in a cute little toilet.
Well worth the $9 price. Oullie got the Ice shavings for 120 TWD ($5) which she couldn't finish because it was huge. Most of the food came in urinals or toilets, hence the theme. Overall, the food was just okay, the ice cream tasted like ice not chocolate. After reading the reviews it seems most people come here for the experience, not the food.
Later we went upstairs to see what the other dining room looked like. The windows were so cute.
After eating we decided to walk around the neighbourhood. There were so many shops and people out even though it was raining.
This area is called Ximending, which we did not know at the time but this is where all young people hang out and go shopping. If we had known about this place earlier we probably would have spent a lot more time here and experienced the nightlife.
Next time I come to Taipei I will have to check this place out more.
Pineapple cake is huge in Taiwan. Pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and are often given as gifts to friends or family. Not quite sure why the cake would be penis shaped though....
After leaving Ximending we just walked to the subway. While walking we came across a lot of cosplay stores. It was really weird. I am not into video games or LARPing (live action role playing for those who don't know) at all so it doesn't interest me at all. We had to walk into a store just to look around, they literally had costumes for everything. There were at least 10 different stores with costumes on our way to the subway. It was so crazy to see it because I've never seen a cosplay store.
In case you want to visit Modern Toilet, here is the map from the website.
