One of the most popular things to do in the north of Thailand is cooking classes. I booked my cookng class through a company called Asia Scenic. There are two options while booking your cooking class; Full day ($37-45) and half day ($30). I opted for a half day cooking class because I had a full schedule. With the half day class you can choose morning or evening, they are both 4 hours long. Transportation is included which picks you up from your hotel and brings you to the location. Upon arriving you get a welcome snack.
After the welcome snack, we went outside to the garden and learned about and tasted some of the herbs that are used in Thai cooking.
Next, we headed to the local market where we were shown what herbs and vegetables we would be using. Also, people were able to buy some spices and other things.
When we got back to the cooking school we looked at the menu and chose what we wanted to cook. For the half day class you only get to make spring rolls then something from the stir fried, salad and curry section. I chose pad see ew, mango salad and green curry.
I've made spring rolls before, so I thought it was super easy.
I also made mango salad which was really good. After we made the appetizers we sat down and ate which our facilitator cleaned up our cooking stations.
Next, the stir fried foods. For the most part there wasn't a lot of work to be done. The carrots were already cut and nothing has to be done with the bean sprouts. It was just the garlic that needed to be chopped and the kale.
Even though I have made this dish before I am not used to cooking with a wok and a gas stove. Gas stoves heat up a lot quicker and it's easier to burn food using it. I thought my meal was good but a bit oily! Be careful not to add too much oil!
Next was the hardest part....making the curries. I chose green curry. We actually had to use a mortar and pestle to grind a whole bunch of spices together to make a paste. It was the most intense workout of my life. Even though there was 5 of us taking turns, it was still really hard to do.
Making the actual curry was really easy and pretty yummy!
Overall, I had a great experience here and would recommend this cooking class. You get more than enough food to eat, a ride there and back. The best part of all is the cookbook you get at the end with all the recipes.
